Get ready to experience the beauty of the Ecuadorian highlands! Our first hike takes us around the Limpiopungo Lagoon (13,000 ft/3,800 m), nestled at the base of the Rumiñahui volcano. Enjoy incredible vistas of Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano, and look for local wildlife like wild horses and bulls. After our two-hour trek, we’ll journey to Isinlivi and settle into the comfortable Llullu Llama Lodge (or similar) for the night. (5 miles, elevation gain 1,000 ft. Meals: B, L, D)
Today’s trek is a feast for the senses! We’ll hike 8.4 miles along the dramatic Toachi Canyon, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, quaint villages, and vibrant agricultural landscapes. Our route descends to the Toachi River and then climbs back up to Chugchilán, a delightful town on the Quilotoa loop. We’ll spend the night at Hostal Mama Hilda (or similar) and have time to explore the village and connect with the local community. (4 hours hiking, elevation change from 10,810 ft to 9,500 ft and back up to 10,498 ft. Meals: B, L, D)
Prepare for a day of awe-inspiring scenery! Following breakfast, we embark on an 11 km (6.9 mile) trek along local trails, descending into dramatic canyons and ascending to the rim of the Quilotoa crater. The panoramic views of the turquoise Quilotoa Lake are simply spectacular. We’ll enjoy a delightful picnic lunch overlooking this natural wonder before transferring to a charming hacienda at the foot of Chimborazo volcano. (4 hours hiking, elevation change from 10,498 ft to 9,800 ft and then up to 13,000 ft. Meals: B, L)
Early this morning, we journey through picturesque valleys and farming villages to reach the majestic Chimborazo Volcano. At 20,702 ft (6,310 m), Chimborazo’s summit holds the distinction of being the furthest point from the Earth’s center. On a clear day, its imposing peak dominates the landscape. Our visit to this spectacular national park includes a short 0.57-mile hike to 16,404 ft (5,000 m), where the glacier begins. Along the way, we’ll search for Andean wildlife, including condors, caracaras, hummingbirds, and the protected vicuña. A delicious picnic at base camp completes our Chimborazo experience. Our day begins with a 6-hour trek in Llanganates National Park, exploring its beautiful landscapes and legendary history. We’ll hike from 10,498 ft (3,200 m) to 12,024 ft (3,600 m), enjoying stunning views of Tungurahua and Sangay Volcanoes (weather permitting). The real treat, however, awaits us in Baños: after our hike, you’ll have the opportunity to unwind with a spa treatment or massage, soak in the town’s famous hot springs, and experience its exciting nightlife. Experience the beauty and adventure of Baños, a town famous for its location at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano and its wide range of outdoor activities. Our day includes a visit to the Bride’s Veil waterfall (via tarabita) and a hike to the stunning Pailón del Diablo. Enjoy the lush cloud forest scenery before our return to Quito. (Hiking: 1 hour 45 minutes, elevation change from 5,249 ft to 4,950 ft. Meals: B)
