Day 1: Cotopaxi Volcano

Our adventure begins by venturing south from Quito, setting our course for Cotopaxi National Park along the renowned Avenue of the Volcanoes. During our journey, we’ll immerse ourselves in the captivating scenery of Andean villages, breathtaking highland landscapes, and the distinctive traditional clothing of the region’s indigenous communities. Upon reaching the national park, we’ll find ourselves at an elevation of 3,800 meters (12,460 feet above sea level). Our first activity involves a scenic hike around Limpiopungo Lake, allowing us to appreciate the park’s stunning natural beauty. Subsequently, we’ll ascend Cotopaxi Volcano via a winding road that leads to the refuge parking area at 4,650 meters (15,250 feet a.s.l.). From there, we’ll undertake a hike to the José Rivas refuge, situated at 4,800 meters (15,750 feet a.s.l.). Due to the high altitude, this seemingly brief hike will require approximately one hour to complete. We’ll proceed to the glacier’s edge, savoring the panoramic views before continuing our journey through the Andes to Baños, a town celebrated for its adventure sports, artisanal crafts, musical talent, and artistic expression.

As we descend into the embrace of the jungle, a breathtaking panorama of Baños unfolds before us, a town celebrated for its spectacular setting at the base of the Tungurahua volcano, an active sentinel since 1999. This natural wonder is a key highlight of our journey. Upon completing our biking adventure, we’ll embark on a brief 20-minute hike to witness the majestic ‘Pailon Del Diablo,’ Ecuador’s second-largest waterfall.
